Cities of Brazil- Rio de Janeiro





Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil. It is located in the southeastern part of the country. 
It is the major route of international tourism in Brazil and the main tourist destination in Latin America and throughout the Southern Hemisphere. 




 It is a major economic center of the country in the cultural and financial areas. It is also internationally known for many cultural icons and landscapes such as  Pão de Açucar, the Corcovado Mountain and the statue, the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema, Barra de Tijuca, the Maracanã Stadium, the João Havelange Olympic Stadium, the Teatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro, the forests of Tijuca, Quinta da Boa Vista, the National Library and many others.



 Rio de Janeiro was the state capital of Brazil from 1621 to 1815. Then from 1763 until 1815 it was a colony of the overseas Portuguese Empire. After this it became the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves in 1815 to 1822. It was also the Empire of Brazil from1822 to 1889 and the Republic of the United States of Brazil from 1889 to 1968 until 1960.


 That means it was the capital of Brazil from 1763 to 1960 when the government moved to the newly built city called Brasília. 


 Currently, Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city, after São Paulo. It is also known as the Marvelous City.
