What is more importaint... to speak or to understand English?

English needs to be understood, this I believe.

But there are many who understand English, but cannot communicate it!!!

This has brought me to where I am today!!!

Let me tell you a little bit about myself.

I believe that it is very important to be able to communicate.  I learned it the hard way. I almost lost my English if it wasn´t possible to return to Canada for 2 months. 

When I got there I saw where I really was. I was able to understand everything perfectly, that means I didn´t have any problem at all to understand what was said.  But when the questions came and I needed to give answers I found myself not having the words. 

Then I understood that in 15 years of living in Brazil I had almost forgotten my mother language. This happened only because I wanted to better my Portuguese. Did my idea help me?   My students today can answer this for you.

After one month of being there and only speaking English, I found myself  not only understanding English, but communicating it too.  

With this in mind I am always pointing to the need of speaking English to my students. I believe it has worked for many of those who have understood it.
